New Fishing Access Project Complete at Green Lake

A $49,000 Environmental Protection Fund project to build an accessible fishing dock and trail is now complete at Green Lake in the town of Athens, Greene County, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced today.

"This is yet another example of an ongoing effort to get people connected to the many recreational outdoor experiences New York State has to offer," Commissioner Martens said. "The new dock and trail will allow individuals with mobility impairments to get out and enjoy this natural area and even drop a fishing line off the new accessible fishing dock."

The company Dock Doctors constructed the dock which includes a permanent steel frame with an internal pile system that is anchored to the lake bedrock. Dock construction required underwater divers from the Dock Doctors to anchor the pile system. DEC staff constructed a 55-foot accessible trail from the parking lot to the fishing pier.

The 35-acre Green Lake is located about two miles north of the hamlet of Leeds and is managed through a cooperative agreement with Greene County. The lake offers public fishing, wildlife viewing and boating opportunities. There is a gravel boat ramp at the site for small trailered and car top boats. DEC stocks the lake with trout each spring.

In support of the NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, this year's budget includes $6 million in NY Works funding to support creating 50 new land and water access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have not reached their full potential. These 50 new access projects include building new boat launches, installing new hunting blinds and building new trails and parking areas. In addition, the 2014-15 budget includes $4 million to repair the state's fish hatcheries; and renews and allows expanded use of crossbows for hunting in New York State.
