Pair Fined for Deer Poaching Violations in Otsego County
On June 9, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Police charged Casey J. Hall, 22, of Mt. Vision, Otsego County, and Ryan C. Barnhart, 29, of Boonville, Oneida County, with three misdemeanors each in relation to the illegal shooting of a deer in the town of New Lisbon on the same day.
The two men were charged with taking deer with the use of artificial light, discharging a firearm across public highway, and possessing a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, all misdemeanors.
On June 9, 2013, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Otsego County emergency dispatch received a call about gunfire on County Route 15 in New Lisbon and an individual entering the woods with a flashlight. An Environmental Conservation Officer and Otsego County Deputy Sheriff responded to the scene and investigated. The two officers found blood on the tailgate of a vehicle belonging to one of the defendants and were able to obtain a full confession after interviewing the suspects.
Both men pleaded guilty in New Lisbon Town Court on June 12 and paid a civil penalty to satisfy the charges. Mr. Hall paid a $2,250 penalty and Mr. Barnhart paid a $2,000 penalty, and both face the possible revocation of their hunting license for up to five years.
