DEC to Prepare a Management Plan on Two State Forests in Western Oneida County

Public Input Sought for Vienna Woods Unit Management Plan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Region 6 Herkimer Office is preparing the Vienna Woods Unit Management Plan (UMP) which will include two state forests and several small parcels of Detached Forest Preserve in southwestern Oneida County, the agency announced today. This plan for the Vienna Woods area will incorporate public input to help guide management of these unique state lands well into the future.

The state forests included in the Unit are Stone Barn and Fish Creek. The state forest lands 1,299 acres total and are located in the Oneida County towns of Annsville, Camden and Vienna. In the general vicinity of the two State Forests are 11 parcels of land categorized as Detached Parcels of Forest Preserve, totaling 888 acres, which will also be addressed in the UMP.

Public input received by mail and email, data collected during forest inventories and other sources of data and information will be used to develop the Vienna Woods UMP. The UMP will guide management actions for the Unit to help achieve the goals of providing healthy, sustainable and biologically diverse forest ecosystems.

Any person or group who would like to mail input or comments on this unit can contact Senior Forester Mary Kay Allen at NYSDEC, 225 North Main Street, Herkimer, NY, 13350, or send an e-mail to Region 6 UMP . For additional information call (315) 866-6330. Public comments must be received by July 1 to be incorporated into the draft UMP.

Once a draft UMP is developed, a public meeting will be held to gather comments on the draft, and solicit additional input.
