DEC: Grants Available For Hudson River Estuary Projects

Grants of up to $10,000 are available to municipalities and not-for-profit corporations to implement the Hudson River Estuary Action Agenda, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The deadline for applying is July 20.

"These grants will help local partners improve the Hudson River," Commissioner Martens said. "We're pleased to say that this is the eleventh year that DEC has offered grants for the Hudson River Estuary to support local projects that help preserve and protect the Estuary."

Approximately $150,000 is available from the state Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) for projects on the Hudson Estuary. Grants are capped at $10,000. To date, the Hudson River Estuary Program has awarded 346 grants totaling $11.7 million.

Grant projects should meet the following eligibility criteria in order to be evaluated and scored:

  • Hudson River Estuary Grants should be linked to one of the twelve goals, and associated targets, of the 2010-2014 Hudson River Estuary Action Agenda;
  • Project success should not depend on funding that is not yet secured;
  • All projects must have defined measurable outcomes or deliverables that can be completed and invoiced within one year of contract approval.

Examples of eligible projects that could potentially be completed within one year of contract approval may include: purchase of floating docks to expand river access; publication of training manuals; supplies and equipment for citizen stewardship; distribution of maps, exhibits, plans, publications or interpretive signage; purchase of equipment to facilitate citizen tree planting projects; and land conservation assistance.

The Hudson River Estuary Action Agenda can be viewed on the DEC's website.

Grant application forms are available on DEC's website. Any questions and/or concerns can be directed to Jill Shaw, Grants Manager at DEC's Albany Office at (518) 402-8270. Completed grant applications should be submitted by mail to Jill Shaw, Hudson River Estuary Grants Manager, NYSDEC, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-3507.
