DEC Program Series at Tivoli Bays Visitor Center Continues
Iceboating: Sailing on the Frozen Hudson River
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Hudson River Research Reserve (Research Reserve) and the Village of Tivoli continue their monthly series entitled "Tivoli Bays Talks" on Thursday, February 2, 2012, from 7:30-8:30 pm. Join John Sperr, veteran member of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club, for a slide presentation on preserving and sailing historic gaff rigged ice yachts on the Hudson River.
Every winter, the sport of iceboating occurs locally on the Hudson River (conditions allowing) much as it has for the last century. During this presentation, we will learn about the history of the ice boat and discover how their design can enhance their speed. We will also discover the conditions necessary for safe ice boating and the modern challenges that face Hudson River ice boaters, which include sharing the river with commercial traffic and coping with the effects of climate change. John will also give us an update of where the Yacht Club fleet will be sailing this winter.
"Tivoli Bays Talks" takes place on the first Thursday of the month (except January) in the Tivoli Bays Visitor Center. The center is located in the Watts dePeyster Hall, 1 Tivoli Commons, Tivoli, New York 12583. Programs cover a wide range of topics connecting the Tivoli Bays to the Village of Tivoli and the Hudson River. The visitor center is wheelchair accessible. Talks begin promptly. Admission is free. For directions or further information, call 845-889-4745 x109.
The Tivoli Bays Visitor Center is open to the public during the regular hours of the Tivoli Free Library or by appointment. Tivoli Bays can be reached by footpath from the Visitor Center, and at designated access points.
