DEC: Additional Pheasants Released In Region 6
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today that additional pheasants will be released the week of October 24, 2011 in Herkimer, Jefferson, Oneida, and St. Lawrence counties. These birds are surplus pheasants from the New York State game farm that are being distributed around the state.
The pheasants are to be released at various locations on State Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The pheasant season in Region 6 opened on October 1st and will close on February 28, 2012.
Already this fall, approximately 3,600 adult pheasants were released throughout the five counties in DEC's Region 6. In Jefferson County, birds were released on Perch River (Town of Orleans), Ashland (Town of Lyme) and French Creek (Town of Clayton) WMAs. In St. Lawrence County, birds were released on Fish Creek (Town of Macomb), Upper & Lower Lakes (Town of Canton) and Wilson Hill (Town of Louisville) WMAs. In Oneida County pheasants were released on Oriskany Flats and Rome WMAs and Verona Beach State Park Cooperative Area. Herkimer and Lewis counties each received pheasants in 3 separate releases on private lands open to public hunting.
Jefferson County will be stocked with an additional 140 birds at Perch River WMA and Ashland WMA. Oneida and Herkimer counties will be stocked at Oriskany Flats WMA and Rome WMA with 70 birds and 70 birds for Herkimer County on private lands opened to public hunting. St. Lawrence County will be stocked with 140 pheasants at Upper and Lower Lakes WMA.
