DEC Tickets 22 ATV Riders
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that 22 all terrain vehicle (ATV) riders were ticketed for illegally riding on state land in the town of Hancock (Delaware County) on October 8. A number of the riders were also charged with operating unregistered ATVs, bringing the total number of tickets to 33.
At about 12:30 p.m. on October 8, DEC Ranger Jason Seeley witnessed a large number of ATVs traveling in the town of Freemont Center in Sullivan County. Due to the large number of ATV riders, Ranger Seeley radioed for assistance and then set out in pursuit of the riders. Forest Rangers Joe Bink and Dave Meade, and Environmental Conservation Officer Scott Steingart responded to the request for assistance.
Following ATV tracks and interviewing witnesses, law enforcement officials were able to catch up to the riders on state land in the town of Hancock where the tickets were issued.
Riding an ATV illegally on state land and operating an unregistered ATV are both violations that are punishable by a fine of up to $150 (plus court costs) and/or up to 15 days in jail. The tickets are answerable in the town of Hancock Court on November 7 at 7:00 p.m.
