Construction to Begin at Moriches Waterway Access Site Nov. 9

Boat Ramp and Parking Lot to be Closed During Construction Activities

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will begin restoration of the Moriches Waterway Access site this fall, Regional Director Peter A. Scully announced today. As a result, the current ramp and adjacent parking lot will be closed to the public beginning Nov. 9, 2009.

Due to storm damage in recent years, the bank facing Harts Cove must be stabilized. The access road to the ramp will be improved and parking areas will be re-graded and given a new layer of bluestone. Areas that are disturbed by the activities on the site will be replanted with native vegetation.

The Moriches Boat ramp is located on Moriches Island Road, just north of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in East Moriches. The property is surplus land owned by the federal government and has been managed by New York State since 1992 through a program called the Federal Lands to Parks Program administered by the National Parks Service.

Current facilities at the Moriches site will be closed to the public until completion of construction activities. The project is currently scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010.
