DEC Announces Fall Camping Opportunities

Select Campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks Offer Post-Labor Day Camping

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis today issued a reminder that 31 of DEC's 52 campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks offer fall camping opportunities. While Hearthstone Point, Lake Luzerne and Lake Harris campgrounds will be closing on Sept. 12, the following facilities will remain open through Oct. 11:

Adirondacks:
Moffit Beach, Northampton Beach, Sacandaga, Eight Lake, Indian Lake Islands, Lake Durant, Lewey Lake, Glen Island, Lake George Battleground, Long Island, Narrow Island, Rogers Rock, Ausable Point, Crown Point, Lake Eaton, Meacham Lake, Paradox Lake, Saranac Lake Islands, Wilmington Notch, and Nick's Lake.

Catskills:
Kenneth L. Wilson, Mongaup Pond, Woodland Valley, Devil's Tombstone, and Little Pond.
Also: Cranberry Lake Campground will remain open until Oct. 17, and North/South Lake and Fish Creek Ponds Campgrounds will remain open until Oct. 24.

"DEC campgrounds offer a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the most beautiful natural resources in New York State," said Commissioner Grannis. "New York State Forest Preserve lands offer the opportunity to see spectacular fall foliage, participate in a variety of seasonal outdoor activities, and enjoy festivals and events offered in local host communities."

Despite the rainy conditions earlier this summer, attendance at DEC campgrounds indicates that they remain a popular vacation destination for New Yorkers. Each year millions of people visit DEC facilities to enjoy spectacular landscapes, lush forests and variety of fish and wildlife species that reside in the constitutionally protected "forever wild" campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill parks.

For campers looking ahead to the 2010 camping season, the reservations can be made nine months in advance. For more information on DEC-operated campgrounds, including a list of campgrounds and their schedules, visit DEC's website, or call DEC's Bureau of Recreation at 518-457-2500. Those with internet access can also watch a clip about backwoods camping and check out other camping clips on DEC TV.

DEC operates 52 campgrounds and seven day-use areas in the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves. To make reservations at any of these camping facilities, call ReserveAmerica at 1-800-456-CAMP (2267) or visit http://newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/ .
