DEC'S Hudson River Research Reserve to Host National Broadcast
"EstuaryLive" Will Bring the Hudson River Estuary into Classrooms around the Country
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Hudson River Research Reserve will be a featured site in this year's production of "EstuaryLive," on Friday May 1. EstuaryLive is a free series of internet "field trips" exploring the uniqueness of estuaries around the United States and is produced by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.
EstuaryLive ( http://www.estuaries.gov/estuaries101/EstuaryLive/Home.aspx ) includes live and archived broadcasts, and videos featuring educators and scientists covering relevant topics such as climate change, estuarine inhabitants, monitoring and data collection, and estuarine ecology.
The Hudson River Estuary broadcasts will take place at Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, Dutchess County - located midway along the 153-mile-long Hudson River Estuary - and will feature naturalists, students and scientists exploring the estuary. Viewers will see fish and other animals that call the Hudson home, observe students engaged in field research, and learn how scientists monitor short-term and long-term changes in the estuary. Featuring the dynamic nature of the Hudson is especially appropriate as the state celebrates the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson's 1609 river voyage.
The May 1 Hudson River Estuary broadcasts will occur from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Also on May 1, the South Slough Research Reserve in Oregon and Padilla Bay Research Reserve in the state of Washington will each broadcast two 30-minute segments. Middle school students are the target audience for EstuaryLive, but other observers with internet access and audio capability are welcome.
