DEC Reminder: ATVS Not Allowed on State Forest Access Roads

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders that State Forest access roads (formerly known as "truck trails") are not open to ATV use.

This restriction applies throughout the state, including the north country and Tug Hill Plateau, and with only a few exceptions made for use by persons with disabilities and to provide connectivity to an existing trail network. Two short sections of State Forest access roads were opened by DEC in Winona State Forest in southern Jefferson County to provide connectivity on an ATV trail network in that area. These road sections are marked as being open for ATV use. Some ATV use is also allowed on roads designated by DEC for use by qualified persons with disabilities, as explained in DEC Commissioner's Policy No. 3.

In all cases, ATVs may only be used on state land where there are DEC signs that specifically indicate that ATVs are allowed.

ATVs or off road vehicles may not be driven off roads on state forests or wildlife management areas. Where ATVs can be legally used or where permission to ride on private land is given, users are encouraged to be safe, courteous to all outdoor users and respectful of private property.

The State Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits the use of ATVs on roads that are opened to motor vehicle use, unless the purpose of the road is to provide ATV connection between trail networks which they could not otherwise access.
