DEC Education Centers To Participate In Global Warming "Teach-In"

Two-Day Web Cast Event on Global Warming Solutions to take place Jan. 30 - 31

There will be numerous sites across New York State where people can participate in the two-day Focus the Nation "2% Solution" web cast event. The web cast will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and be followed by a national "teach-in" about global warming set for Thursday, Jan. 31. The event is designed to help stimulate dialog and action on climate change. Various state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) educational centers will participate in the event (see list below).

The web cast event organized by "Focus the Nation," is part of an unprecedented national educational initiative on global warming solutions for America. It will be hosted at more than 1,300 universities and colleges and in communities within all 50 states across the nation. As the largest "teach-in" in U.S. history, "Focus the Nation" is intended to engage millions of students and numerous communities in collaborative discussion of global warming solutions.

Reducing the impacts of climate change is a top priority for New York State. This year, DEC established a new division, the Climate Change Office, dedicated to the issue of global warming and climate change. The office will play a key role in carrying out the state's programs to reduce emissions and implement initiatives to accelerate the protection of air, land and water quality. Through the new office, DEC will implement climate change actions that include helping implement the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), and other carbon dioxide reduction efforts. Visit the Focus the Nation website at http://www.focusthenation.org/ to link to information about the web cast and click on the interactive map provided on each page of the website to find participating sites in your area.
