Universally Accessible Trail Opens at Lampson Falls

Path to 100-ft waterfall is latest of accessible outdoor projects in North Country

A new, universally accessible trail to Lampson Falls in Clare, St. Lawrence County, was officially opened today, marking the latest of more than 20 accessible outdoor recreation projects in the North Country, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis announced.

The 2,900-foot-long path expands opportunities for individuals with disabilities to experience this spectacular 100-foot vertical drop waterfall on the Grasse River.

"This northwest corner of the Adirondack Forest Preserve possesses some beautiful natural areas with all of the ingredients for a wonderful outdoor experience, and we are pleased to open this trail so that all people will be able to enjoy Lampson Falls," Grannis said. "I am proud to be here to acknowledge the accomplishments of DEC regional staff in their development of dozens of accessible outdoor recreation sites around the North Country."

When DEC was identifying areas to create universal access, Lampson Falls loomed large as a potential destination - the site is very popular. Designing an accessible trail was a challenge and, ultimately, an achievement. The majority of the trail is at a grade of 5 percent or less. However, users should be prepared for steeper grades of up to 10 percent to reach a mid-falls point that offers a great view of the falls and the surrounding area. Level resting areas were designed at close intervals along the trail.

Beginning in 2003, DEC Region 6 began construction of accessible outdoor recreation sites around the North County. These accessible projects included hiking trails, campsites, waterway access, picnic areas and fishing piers. Twenty-six other projects have been completed in Region 6 counties and the finishing touches are being made to several others.

"DEC's Universal Access Program highlights these improvements to recreational facilities on state lands for accessible camping, fishing, boating, bird watching and exploration of natural areas. Highlighting this universally accessible trail at Lampson Falls furthers our recognition of National Disability Awareness Month," the commissioner said.

"The wonderful thing about the Adirondack Park is its diverse mixture of natural and man-made assets," said. Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome. "Quite frankly, there is enough room in the Forest Preserve for all New Yorkers and our visitors to enjoy its natural beauty. I commend Commissioner Grannis and the DEC staff for their efforts to create this accessible trail which further ensures that people of all physical abilities can experience our great outdoors."

"We are lucky to live in one of the world's most scenic regions. The universally accessible trail is a great development for local tourism and it expands opportunities in outdoor recreation," said Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, R-Gouverneur.
