DEC Announces Environmental Conservation Officer Exam

Applications Being Accepted Through October 30th for Exam on December 2, 2006

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Denise M. Sheehan today announced that the Civil Service examination for Environmental Conservation Officer will be given on December 2, 2006.

Commissioner Sheehan said, "Environmental Conservation Officers are the first line of defense in protecting New York State's natural resources and environment. We are looking for qualified candidates to join the ranks of our dedicated officers to ensure that we continue to successfully carry out our mission of protecting the environment for future generations."

Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) are sworn police officers who specialize in enforcing the Environmental Conservation Law. ECOs investigate complaints to detect and document both state and federal environmental felonies, misdemeanors and violations. ECOs regularly make presentations to school groups, sportsmen's clubs and other various groups to promote compliance with the Environmental Conservation Law.

DEC Director of Law Enforcement Robert T. Lucas said, "Conservation Law Enforcement has a proud history and tradition in New York State. A career as an ECO offers a great diversity of opportunities. It is this diversity that helps make the work of an ECO such a rewarding experience. We are looking for qualified individuals to carry on with our proud tradition of protecting New York's resources."

ECOs receive a competitive salary and benefits package. ECOs work throughout New York State and are required to carry a firearm as part of their duties.

Passing the Civil Service examination is the first step to becoming an ECO. Prior to appointment, candidates must pass a physical examination, demonstrate excellent moral character and habits, and pass a physical agility test. All ECO trainees must successfully complete a 26-week residential basic training academy, currently held in Fulton, New York. This academy emphasizes police skills as well as specialized aspects of environmental law enforcement.

To qualify for the Civil Service examination, candidates must meet certain education and/or experience requirements. A detailed list of minimum qualifications for the exam and instructions for how to apply on-line or through the mail are available on the NYS Department of Civil Service website at: www.cs.state.ny.us/announ/scheduled/Oct30-2006/24-681.cfm Applications must be postmarked by October 30, 2006.

More information about a career as an ECO can be obtained at www.dec.state.ny.us or by contacting the DEC Division of Law Enforcement at 518-402-8829.
