DEC: Leftover Deer Management Permits to Be Available
Applications Accepted Starting November 1, 2004 in Certain Wildlife Management Units
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Erin M. Crotty today announced that approximately 60,000 Deer Management Permits (DMPs) will be made available to hunters on a first-come, first-served basis beginning on November 1, 2004.
"While enjoying New York's bountiful white-tailed deer population, hunters also serve as New York's premier deer managers. Without regulated harvest, white-tailed deer would quickly overpopulate much of New York causing immeasurable hardship to motorists, farmers, private landowners and others," Commissioner Crotty said. "Through regulated harvest, DEC can maintain deer populations that best meet the needs and desires of most New Yorkers."
DEC will reopen the DMP application process starting November 1, 2004 on a first-come, first-served basis for Wildlife management Units (WMUs) that did not reach target totals during earlier random selections. No DMP applications were denied in these units. On November 1, 2004, DMP applications will be accepted for the following WMUs: 1C, 3F, 3M, 3N, 3S, 4J, 8A, 8C, 8F, 8G, 8H, 8N, 8R, 9A, and 9F.
Hunters may apply for leftover DMPs at any DEC license sales outlet. Leftover DMPs will not be available by phone or by mail.
DEC will issue DMPs for an individual WMU all day once a WMU is opened for leftover issuance. The status of permits will be reviewed each night at midnight, and any filled units will be removed from the list of those available, with no further applications accepted for those units.
For locations of these WMUs and updates, check the 2004 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide or the WMU page on DEC's website.
