DEC Reminds Hunters of Deer Management Permit Deadline
Must be Applied For By October 1, 2004
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Erin M. Crotty today reminded big game hunters that the deadline for applying for Deer Management Permits (DMPs) is fast approaching. Persons wishing to apply for a permit to take an antlerless deer must apply by close of business October 1, 2004.
If selected during the instant lottery, DMPs will be immediately issued to applicants by the license issuing agent. An applicant may apply for one or two permits in the same or different Wildlife Management Units (WMUs). DMP applications are free to licensed resident big game hunters possessing a Sportsman, Super Sportsman or Conservation Legacy license and to non-residents possessing a Super Sportsman license. All other big game hunters are required to pay a $10 application fee. Legislation recently passed also allows non-resident Bowhunting and/or Muzzleloading license holders to apply for Deer Management Permits for a $10 application fee.
Hunters possessing valid DMPs may take one additional deer of either sex on each permit they possess. Legally antlered deer (deer with either antler 3 inches in length or longer) may not be taken on DMPs. DMPs are valid only in the area for which they are issued.
Applicants are encouraged to review the chart on pages 28-29 of the "Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide" (Guide) or go to DEC's website for information on chances of selection. All License Issuing Agents were also provided with a poster of the DMP odds. Agents may not be familiar with an applicant's chances of selection in all WMUs, as it the applicant's responsibility for selecting their WMU. A map of all WMUs is available on page 4 and 5 of the Guide. These and written boundary descriptions are available on DEC's website.
When purchasing a hunting license and DMP, applicants must bring a NYS Drivers license or NYS Non-Drivers license and the WMU(s) for which they wish to apply for DMPs. For landowners owning 50 or more acres of land in the WMU where they are applying should bring your Tax Map Identification number and Swiss code from your tax bill. Disabled Veterans- If you are a NYS resident and have 40 percent or greater Service-related disability, bring a letter from the VA with your case number. If you need assistance call DEC's DMP information hotline at 1-866-472-4332.
Hunters can purchase hunting licenses at anyone of DEC's 1500 license sales outlets. By phone from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., call the toll-free telephone number at 1-86-NY-DECALS (1-866-933-2257). A license application and instructions can be downloaded from our website to apply by mail.
