State Seeks Input on Draft Hazardous Facility Siting Plan
Additional Hearing Date, Extended Public Comment Period Announced
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Erin M. Crotty today announced an additional public hearing and the extension of the public comment period for the State's draft Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Plan and supporting draft generic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The draft Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Plan assists New York State in its review of proposals for new or expanded hazardous waste management facilities. When final, the Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Plan will be used as a framework by any hazardous waste facility siting boards to review proposals for siting certain new or expanded hazardous waste treatment, storage or disposal facilities (TSDFs) within New York State.
The draft Siting Plan recognizes the national and international nature of the hazardous waste management industry and provides a comprehensive assessment of New York State's past, present and future needs. The Siting Plan also serves as a resource for DEC and other government agencies to help assess the availability of sufficient hazardous waste TSDF capacity.
The public comment period has been extended from January 19, 2004, to April 19, 2004. The additional hearing will take place on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 6 p.m. in the Lewiston-Porter Senior High School Auditorium, 4061 Creek Road, Youngstown, Niagara County.
