DEC Offering Tests to Fill Lifeguard Positions
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Denise M. Sheehan today announced that DEC will be offering free lifeguard tests starting Saturday, January 8, 2006, in the Adirondack and Catskill regions for anyone interested in working as a lifeguard at a DEC facility next summer. Only candidates who pass the examination will be considered for employment.
"DEC's many campgrounds and facilities offer great employment opportunities," Commissioner Sheehan said. "The upcoming tests will be offered for free, making it easy for interested individuals to apply for rewarding and productive seasonal positions as a lifeguard this coming summer."
The test is open to persons aged 16 and older. Candidates must also have 20/40 uncorrected vision in each eye. The test includes an in-water demonstration of lifesaving skills and techniques and performance of the Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) single rescuer procedure. Candidates will be evaluated on a pass or fail basis. The exam may be taken at the DEC testing location most convenient to the applicant and the results will be forwarded to the preferred work location. To pre-register for an exam contact 518-457-2500.
At the time of employment, all DEC lifeguards must:
- be at least 16 years of age;
- possess a valid American Red Cross (or equivalent) certification in lifeguarding, and Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer (BLS);
- have successfully completed the New York State DEC lifeguard exam;
- have attended one of the DEC lifeguard orientations;
- have completed a personal interview with DEC, and
- submit a current certification of the applicant's physical ability to perform lifeguard duties.
The schedule for lifeguard testing is attached.
