DEC "On The Front Lines" Video Features Research Scientist Marilyn Wurth And Albany South End Air Quality Study

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos is proud to present the latest episode of "On the Front Lines", the agency's video series profiling staff and their work to conserve the environment, protect New York's natural resources, and serve the public.

"We are proud of this series, which gives the public a behind-the-scenes look at the great work our dedicated employees do every day across the state to preserve and protect the environment for generations to come," Commissioner Seggos said. "It's an opportunity for New Yorkers to learn more about the issues we tackle in their communities so that we can all reap the benefits of a healthy environment. A special thanks to DEC Research Scientist Marilyn Wurth for her work on the year-long Albany South End Air Quality study."

The latest episode featuring Wurth can be viewed here.

A graduate of Siena College in Loudonville, NY, Wurth went on to receive her Master's Degree in Science and Environmental Health from the University at Albany. She is a member of DEC's Emissions Measurement Research Group, which completed a year-long study to evaluate the air quality in Albany's South End after residents expressed concerns about the number of trucks that drive through their area every day.

Two fixed monitoring sites were installed in the neighborhood. One monitor is located at the Ezra Prentice Apartments and the other was on 3rd Avenue near Hawk Street. Both monitors, in addition to street-by-street sampling, were used to collect concentrations of chemicals and particulate matter in the air, factoring wind speed and direction. In this episode of 'On the Front Lines,' Wurth shows us how the study was conducted.

"On the Front Lines" is posted monthly on DEC's YouTube channel and Facebook and Twitter pages. Watch past episodes on DEC's YouTube channel.
