DEC Releases Draft North/South Lake Accessibility Amendment For Public Review

A draft North/South Lake Unit Management Plan (UMP) amendment has been released for public review and comment, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Keith Goertz announced today.

The draft UMP amendment proposes a number of accessible renovations and improvements to the North Lake beach and day use area, including:

  • construction of an accessible stone and concrete path with two new accessible benches;
  • construction of an accessible wooden fishing platform;
  • construction of an accessible concrete path from an accessible parking area to changing rooms;
  • construction of an accessible boardwalk providing water access for people with disabilities;
  • construction of an accessible wooden ramp from the parking lot to the beach;
  • improvements to the changing room building.

The draft UMP amendment is available on DEC's website and is also available on compact disc and may be obtained by calling DEC at (518) 457-2500.

DEC is accepting public comments on the draft UMP amendment until close of business on June 27, 2018. Written comments may be mailed to NYS DEC Bureau of Recreation, 625 Broadway Albany NY 12233- 5253, or emailed to campinfo@dec.ny.gov.

North/South Lake campground, located in the Greene County town of Hunter, is one of the most heavily used DEC campgrounds. It first opened in 1926, and is located two miles northeast of the hamlet of Haines Falls, on County Route 18. The campground is on the eastern edge of the Catskill escarpment in the Catskill Forest Preserve and is home to historic sites such as the Catskill Mountain House and Sunset Rock.
