DEC Seeks Public Input on the Ontario Plains Draft Unit Management Plan

Public Meeting to be Held July 27, 2017

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is requesting public input on the draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) for Ontario Plains. "Ontario Plains offers a wide range of recreational opportunities for visitors, including hiking and bird watching, as well as fishing, boating, and limited all-terrain vehicle (ATV) access for persons with mobility impairments," said Judy Drabicki, Regional Director. "The draft UMP has been developed to address management activities on these state properties and enhance recreational opportunities."

Consisting of three State Land parcels, Ontario Plains covers more than 3,050 total acres in the Jefferson County towns of Henderson, LeRay, Theresa, and Antwerp. The State Forests are: Henderson Shores Unique Area - 894 acres; Coyote Flats State Forest - 553 acres; and Pulpit Rock State Forest - 1,603 acres.

DEC will accept public input on the draft UMP at an open house on July 27, 2017, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., at the Dulles State Office Building, first floor conference room, Room 100, Watertown, NY 13601. The first half hour of the evening will be an open session to talk with DEC staff, followed by a brief presentation on the draft UMP at 7:30pm. Comments will be collected during and after the presentation. All comments must be received by August 30, 2017.

The draft Ontario Plains UMP documents are available on DEC's website. Copies are also available in electronic format on compact disc and may be requested by calling (315) 376-3521.
