DEC Region 6 Participates in Dune Fest, May 31, 2017

School kids learn about dunes

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 6 Wildlife staff, along with DEC Region 7 fisheries staff, New York State Parks Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation, and New York Sea Grant, will be conducting the annual 'Dune Fest' on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Dune Fest educates local students from Belleville-Henderson Central School (Jefferson County) and Sandy Creek Central School (Oswego County) about the area's fragile dune system and the flora and fauna that depend on it. Approximately 80 sixth and seventh grade students will take part in the event, which will be held at Southwicks Beach State Park (Jefferson County). Students will learn about the fragile and rare habitat located in their own backyard and its importance to area fish and fauna. Presenters will talk about dune ecology, native fish and bird species, as well as terrestrial invasive species of Lake Ontario, the aquatic food web, and boating and water safety. A portion of Dune Fest is spent walking the beach and getting an up close and personal account of the topics. For more information email Region 6 at information.R6@dec.ny.gov or call 315-785-2239.
