DEC Announces Free Earth Day Fishing Clinic at Prospect Park

State-sponsored free fishing clinics encourage NYC residents to try new sport

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) I FISH NY program, in conjunction with the Prospect Park Audubon Center, will conduct a free fishing clinic at the Prospect Park Audubon Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 22 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. Loaner fishing rods and bait will be available free of charge for those who want to participate. Information on the freshwater fish of Prospect Park Lake and fishing regulations will also be available at the event.

"As we begin to celebrate earth week with community events planned across the state, this is a great time to remind NYC residents about all the wonderful natural resources that exist right here in the five boroughs. I hope everyone has the chance to get outdoors this week to enjoy nature. I especially encourage folks to take advantage of the Free Fishing event at Prospect Park Lake," said DEC Regional Director Steve Zahn.

To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding fishing opportunities, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time with additional DEC-led free fishing clinics throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to enable more people to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer.

Governor Cuomo's NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, under the 2016-17 budget, provides $3 million for State land access projects and $4 million for hunting and fishing infrastructure.

This Earth Day Fishing Clinic is a DEC-designated Free Fishing Event, so a fishing license is not required, nor is pre-registration necessary. For more information about this event, please call 718-482-4922.

Information on the location of the Prospect Park Audubon Center can be found on Prospect Park Alliance's website (link leaves DEC's website.)
