DEC Announces Prospect Mountain Veteran's Memorial Parkway Will Remain Open Through First Weekend in November

Parkway Can Be Accessed for No Fee on November 5th & 6th in Honor of Veterans

Prospect Mountain Veteran's Memorial Parkway will remain open through Sunday, November 6, 2016 and will be open free of charge on November 5th & 6th, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Regional Director Robert Stegemann announced today.

"Visitors and residents will be able to enjoy the amazing views of Lake George and the surrounding Adirondack Mountains provided by the popular Prospect Mountain Veteran's Memorial Parkway for a longer period of time this fall," said Director Stegemann. "We also want to honor all the men and women who served in our country's military by allowing everyone to access the parkway for free on the weekend before Veteran's Day."

The 5½ mile parkway located, just outside the village of Lake George, has three separate overlooks - The Narrows, Lake George and Eagle's Eye - from which to enjoy the scenery. A shuttle runs from the parking lot at the end of the parkway to the 2,030-foot summit of Prospect Mountain. The summit provides 360° views, while numerous locations just below the summit also provide viewing opportunities.

A self-guided nature trail, the remains of the world's largest cable railroad and picnic facilities can also be enjoyed by visitors. A 1.5-mile hiking trail ascends 1,630 feet from the village of Lake George to the summit of the mountain.

An accessible picnic pavilion sets within the picnic area near the summit. Earlier this year an Excelsior Conservation Corp crew completed an accessible walkway allowing people with disabilities to access the summit of the mountain from an accessible parking spot along the summit roadway.

Access fees to the Prospect Mountain Veteran's Memorial Parkway are $10 for a car, $4 for a motorcycle and $50 for a commercial bus.
