DEC Releases Draft Updated Unit Management Plan for Kenneth L. Wilson Campground for Public Review

An Open House is Scheduled for 7/14/16 to Learn About and Comment on the Future of this Popular Catskill Campground

An updated Draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the Kenneth L. Wilson Campground is now available for public review, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today.

Kenneth L. Wilson Campground was officially opened in 1979 and is located in the eastern Catskills, six miles west of the hamlet of Woodstock on Wittenberg Road in Ulster County. The campground is completely surrounded with beautiful mountain vistas and includes a seven-acre lake for fishing and boating and a pavilion for picnicking. To add to the very picturesque setting, the Little Beaverkill flows along the campground's day-use area.

"The public is crucial in helping us guide the future management of our campgrounds and properties, like this popular Catskills location," Commissioner Seggos said. "We invite the public to submit input on this draft plan, which over the next 10 years will guide the management of this popular Catskills campground and lay the foundation for improving visitor access and recreational experiences."

Some of the proposed management actions for the campground are:

  • Construction of a picnic pavilion
  • Construction of a universally accessible fishing pier, viewing walkway
  • Replacing existing dock with a universally accessible canoe/kayak launch
  • Rehabilitating bathrooms in camping loops
  • Developing a multiple use trail system
  • Creating a dog walking area
  • Reestablishing a beach and swimming area

The Public can view the Draft Kenneth L. Wilson Campground UMP documents on DEC's website. Copies are also available in electronic format on compact disc and may be requested by calling (518) 457-2500.

DEC staff will be available to answer questions, provide information about the Campground, its history, recreational use and accept public comments on the draft UMP at an open house scheduled for 7/14/16 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at:

Kenneth L. Wilson Campground Pavilion
859 Wittenberg Road
Mt. Tremper, NY 12457

In addition to the open house, public comments on the Draft UMP can be submitted by mail or email to:
NYS DEC Bureau of Recreation
625 Broadway Albany NY 12233-5253

All comments must be received by July 30, 2016. DEC will review all comments as it finalizes the UMP for the Kenneth L. Wilson Campground.
