"I Love My Park Day" Recognized at the Hudson River Special Management Area

Saturday, May 7, 2016, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be working with volunteers to complete needed improvements at the Hudson River Special Management Area, also known as the Hudson River Recreation Area. The Hudson River Special Management Area is located on the eastern shore of the Hudson River in the Lake George Wild Forest. It includes 5,550 acres of forest preserve lands in the towns of Warrensburg and Lake Luzerne in Warren County.

The miles of frontage on the east bank of the Hudson River make this area popular for camping, swimming, picnicking, boating, tubing, and other recreational activities," said Robert Stegemann, DEC Region 5 Director. "This is the first year DEC has participated in "I Love My Park Day" and we are excited to take this opportunity to make the necessary improvements to ensure the public continues to have a safe and enjoyable experience on this land."

Projects will include tree planting, hardening of a universally accessible waterway access site, litter pick up, and painting of gates and privies.

Volunteers should sign-up ahead of time at the Parks and Trails of New York website. (link leaves DEC's website) Volunteers should bring water, a snack and lunch, and should wear garden gloves, boots and long pants. Meet at intersection of Thomas Rd and River Rd in Lake Luzerne at 9:30 a.m. For more information, contact Robert Ripp via email (info.R5@dec.ny.gov) or phone: (518) 623-1209.

Directions: Take I-87 to Exit 21. Take State Route 9N toward Lake Luzerne for ~7 miles, then turn right on Old Stage Road. Take a left onto Thomas Rd, the parking area is at the end of this road. Google map directions are available. (link leaves DEC's website)

"I Love My Park Day" will be held at 110 parks and historic sites across the state on May 7, 2016, and provides an opportunity to give back and ensure that others can continue to enjoy some of the state's greatest open spaces.
