Draft Bear Spring Mt. Campground Plan Released for Public Comment

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is accepting public comment on its draft Bear Spring Mountain campground Unit Management Plan (UMP) through April 30, DEC Regional Director Keith Goertz announced today. The campground is located in the Delaware County towns of Walton and Colchester. The draft plan will guide management of the campground for the next 10 years. DEC will consider all public comment as it finalizes the management plan for the campground.

The draft plan calls for the creation of 15 remote campsites at Launt Pond, construction of accessible paths to the amphitheater and pavilion, electric hookups for 14 campsites, construction of an accessible playground, the paving of campground loop roads and a number of other infrastructure improvements.

DEC will host a public availability session to receive public input on the draft plan and answer questions about campground management on March 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DEC Region 4 Stamford office, 65561 State Highway 10, Stamford.

The 31-acre campground is part of the 7,141 acre wildlife management area by the same name in Delaware County. It boasts 41 campsites, a picnic area with tables, grills, volleyball and pavilion rental, boat rentals, firewood sales, trailer dump station, recycling center, flush toilets, hot showers, boat launch, sand beach, and horse stalls with an accessible horse mounting ramp.

The surrounding area is a haven for outdoor recreation enthusiasts and is well known for its excellent hunting and fishing opportunities. There are 26 miles of well-marked multi-use trails accessible from the campground leading to the adjacent wildlife management area. The trails are used by hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and equestrians.

Public comment on the draft Bear Spring Mountain campground UMP will be accepted through April 30, 2015, and can be submitted by mail or email to: NYS DEC Bureau of Recreation, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-5253, campinfo@dec.ny.gov.
