Sodus Lime and Stone, LLC

Background:

The applicant, Sodus Lime and Stone LLC, proposes the development, operation and reclamation of a 32.7 acre bedrock mine on an approximately 64 acre site located at the southwest corner of Quarry Road and South Geneva Road in the Town of Sodus, Wayne County. The proposed project includes the stripping and placement of overburden material as berms; construction of an entrance road, scale house and plant area; and the processing (crushing and screening by a portable plant) and marketing of overburden materials which can be made into saleable aggregate materials; separation (by blasting), excavation (front end loader) and processing (crushing and screening by portable plant) of approximately 150,000 tons of bedrock consolidated material into marketable aggregate per year; seasonal dewatering of the bedrock quarry to facilitate mining and discharge of the water to NYS freshwater wetland SO-34 via a drainage channel; and reclamation of the excavated area to a 21.7 acre open body of water surrounded by vegetated area. It is estimated that it will take 25 years to extract the aggregate resource at the proposed rate.

The Draft EIS discusses the existing conditions and potential environmental impacts of the mine on land use, ground and surface waters, wetlands, noise, dust, traffic, wildlife, historic resources. The Draft EIS has been accepted by the Department as sufficiently adequate in format and content to be accepted for public review and comment.
