Fly Fishing in New York

Flyfishing at the DEC Beaverkill Campground covered bridge

New York is often referred to as the birthplace of fly fishing in the U.S. Anglers can enjoy fly fishing for brook, brown and rainbow trout in over 15,000 miles of coldwater streams including historic waters such as the Batten Kill, Beaver Kill and Willowemoc Creek. Outstanding flyfishing can be also found in the tributaries to the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain and Finger Lakes where spawning trout and salmon can be found from fall to spring. Fly fishing is not limited to coldwater species. Anglers seeking a challenge will find a host of warmwater sportfish from smallmouth bass to northern pike eager to take a fly.
