Unit Management Plans Covering State Forests in Central New York

A Unit Management Plans (UMPs) is a tool used by state foresters to assess the natural and physical resources present within a land unit, which consists of one or more state forests. UMPs identify opportunities for public use, such as hunting, fishing and hiking, which are consistent with the classifications of these lands, and consider the ability of the resources and ecosystems to accommodate such uses.

The table below lists the state forests in Central New York (Region 7) and indicates the corresponding Unit Management Plan for each forest. More detailed information related to land uses, forest inventories and planned upgrades for infrastructure and recreation in each forest can be found in its "parent" UMP. Those UMPs with a single asterisk (*) after the name are older UMPs and are only available in paper format at the Sherburne Lands and Forests Office. Those UMPs with a double asterisks (**) after the name are also older UMPs and are only available in paper format at the Cortland Lands and Forests Office.

In addition to those plans identified here, several forests are not yet covered by a unit management plan. The planning process for these forests are in various stages of development, and either no draft UMP is available yet or the planning period for the UMP has not opened yet. When planning begins for new UMPs, public involvement will be solicited through public meetings, press releases and other forms of public outreach.
