Tillman Road Wildlife Management Area

With an 80-acre cattail marsh, this is an ideal place to view migrating waterfowl resting and feeding during the spring and fall. Walk the boardwalk during the spring and summer and listen to a serenade of song from seven different species of frogs.
Description: Only 8 miles East of the City of Buffalo, Tillman Road Wildlife Management Area is a wet lowland with an emergent marsh, open water, grassy fields, a deciduous swamp, and hardwood forest. Parking areas are located on Bergtold Road and on Tillman Road. Two hiking trails and a self-guided nature loop trail provide access, and a boardwalk with a viewing platform is located at the Bergtold Road entrance
Viewing Information: This area's most prominent feature is an 80 acre cattail marsh which attracts large numbers of waterfowl during the spring and fall migrations. Canada geese, mallards and wood ducks are the most abundant of these. Other birds attracted to the water here are green and great blue herons, American bittern, pied-billed grebe, and Virginia and sora rails. Mammals are abundant here, too, although
more secretive. Watch for signs or tracks of muskrat and beaver, mink and raccoon. More upland species include white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbit and gray squirrel. Amphibian watching is excellent here. Salamanders are often seen, and watch or listen for seven frogs: spring peeper, green, bull, wood, Western chorus, Northern leopard, and gray tree frogs. Painted turtles are very common and you may also see snapping turtle, garter and Northern water snakes. Dragonflies are everywhere and a variety of butterflies are attracted to wildflowers.
Accessible Features: Present at Tillman Road Wildlife Management Area is an accessible day use area and an accessible nature walk.
