Huggins Lake Brook Trout Survey (2009)

Huggins Lake in Delaware County is one of two wild brook trout ponds in Region 4 and requires a 2 mile hike by anglers to reach the pond. A population study was conducted in early May on this 19 acre lake to determine the current status of brook trout (Tunis Lake strain). The preliminary estimate of 852 brook trout was essentially unchanged from the estimated population of 841 brook trout recorded during a similar study in 2004. Of the 190 brook trout collected, 87 were legal size (> 12 inches). The current density is approximately 45 fish/acre and 21 legal fish per acre. The largest brook trout collected measured 15.6 inches. The brookies in this pond typically reach a maximum size of about 16 inches. Non-trout species continue to remain absent in Huggins Lake.
