Otsego Lake Walleye Netting (2008)

The 4,200 acre Otsego Lake in Otsego County was recently netted for walleyes to evaluate the effectiveness of the walleye stocking program that began in 2000. We collected 156 walleye of which 138 were legal size (15 inches or longer). The catch of 15.6 walleye/net indicates that an abundant population is now present in Otsego Lake. Although an abundant population is now present, the development of a self sustaining walleye population is unlikely to occur due to the abundant alewife population in the lake. Young of year walleye will not survive the six to eight week pelagic phase due to intense predation by alewife. The walleye population and growing fishery for this species will require the continued stocking of walleye fingerlings.
