Guilford Lake Fisheries Investigation (1995)

Survey Number: 795027

Survey Dates: August 14-15, 1995

Abstract

A fisheries investigation was conducted on Guilford Lake in 1995 to assess the fish community impacts of a small, privately conducted, stocking of walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and a departmental stocking policy change from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to brown trout (Salmo trutta). Results indicate that the panfish community and golden shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas) size and abundance was virtually unchanged. A mixed policy of brown and rainbow trout should be considered in the future to improve catch rates and provide more diversity for anglers. Predator numbers are still low, and efforts by the Chenango County Federation of Sportsman to raise walleye fingerlings for stocking into Guilford Lake should continue to be supported.
