Northern Catskills Trail Closure Summary

Heavy snowfall and high winds on April 15-16, 2007, caused broken tree tops and blowdown in the northern portions of the Catskill Forest Preserve. Many area trails have since been cleared of storm debris, however, there are a few trails that have yet to be cleared. The following information is based on reports from Hikers, Volunteer Trail Maintainers, DEC Trail Crews, and DEC Forest Rangers.

August 1, 2007 Update:

Blackhead Range Wild Forest

  • All trails in the Blackhead Range Wild Forest are clear of storm damage, including the Black Dome Trail (Red), Blackhead Mountain Trail (Yellow), Batavia Kill Trail (Yellow), and the Escarpment Trail (Blue).

Kaaterskill Wild Forest and North Mountain Wild Forest

  • All trails are clear with the exception of the Kaaterskill High Peak and Roundtop snowmobile loop.

Indian Head-Plateau Mountain Wilderness

  • The Devils Path Trail is clear from Prediger Road to Notch Lake, crossing Indian Head Mountain, Twin Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain and Plateau Mountain.
  • All the other trails are clear of debris.

Hunter Mountain Wild Forest

  • The Hunter Mountain Trail (Yellow) and Becker Hollow Trail (Blue) are clear of storm damage .

West Kill Mountain Wilderness

  • The Devils Path Trail is clear of blowdown west of its junction with the Diamond Notch Trail to the summit of West Kill Mountain. However, the trail has not been cleared from the summit to County Route 6.
