See below for map of the West Branch Ausable River from Lake Placid downstream to Ausable Forks. Much of the river runs along Route 86 or the River Road in Essex County and is easily reached from the numerous pull-offs. The Angler Diary program for the West Branch includes all the river area shown on the map.

The following two sections have special "No-Kill" regulations:

  • Mouth of Holcomb Pond outlet downstream to marked boundary 2.2 miles downstream of Monument Falls
  • Whiteface Ski Center bridge downstream to the Route 86 bridge at the Flume

Special trout regulations

  • Open all year
  • Catch and release only
  • Artificial lures only

Regulations for trout on the West Branch outside of the Catch and Release sections:

  • April 1 - October 15 season
  • Daily limit of 5
  • Any size may be taken
