East Koy Creek (2005)
Fisheries Survey Summary
East Koy Creek was electrofished in the summer of 2005 at eight stations within the 13.5 mile stocked section and one station upstream of the stocked section. This popular stream is located in southeastern Wyoming County, flowing through the villages of Hermitage and Gainesville. Hatchery brown trout biomass averaged 10 lb/acre and ranged from 7 lb/acre to 22 lb/acre depending on location. This was slightly below the 1990-1997 average of 14 lb/acre. The density of stocked brown trout in 2005 was 86 fish/mile, which was about 10% of the number that was stocked in the spring.
The late summer biomass of age 1+ and older wild brown trout within the stocked section averaged 31 lb/acre and ranged from 11 lb/acre to 117 lb/acre depending on location. This was slightly above the 1990-1997 average of 26 lb/acre. The density of wild brown trout in 2005 was 355 fish/mile which was above the 1990-1997 average of 274 fish/mile. The wild brown trout biomass in the station upstream of the stocked section was 32 lb/acre, perhaps an indication that fishing is not having a major effect on the wild population.
The wild brown trout biomass is quite variable on East Koy Creek depending on sampling location. Habitat is one major variable between stations, but it is likely environmental stresses probably affect wild brown trout numbers the most. Agricultural practices including irrigation, agricultural leachates, pasturing livestock in streams and pesticide misuse are all major concerns. Perhaps the greatest deterrent to increasing the wild brown trout population in East Koy Creek are summer water temperatures, exacerbated by past removal of riparian vegetation, pasturing livestock in streams, the construction of man-made ponds and extensive beaver activity.
East Koy Creek is heavily stocked, has a moderate wild brown trout population, is easily accessible with 13 miles of public fishing rights easements and consistently has high angler catch rates. To increase angling opportunity, the fishing season will be extended to year-round (starting October 1, 2006). Existing regulations would remain in place from April 1- October 15 and during the October 1 - March 31 period, catch and release fishing using artificial lures only will be allowed.
