Outdoors Day

On June 9th DEC and State Parks celebrated National Get Outdoors Day by hosting free events across the state. With over thousands in attendance, New Yorkers spent the day trying new activities including paddling, archery, hiking and more. Thank you to all that attended! Check out some of our photos on our Flickr album (link leaves DEC website).

Overlook Mountain hike (Kenneth L. Wilson Campground): DEC staff and a Forest Ranger will lead participants on a 5-mile, round-trip hike to the top of Overlook Mountain to see a DEC firetower, ruins of the former Overlook Mountain House, and panoramic views of the Hudson Valley. Be prepared for a strenuous hike - the ascent is steady with a continuous incline on a former carriage road. This hike is not for beginners but is meant for those who have always wanted to climb a mountain but didn't know where to start. Elevation gain is 1,400 feet. Participants should wear hiking boots and bring at least 3 liters of water and lunch. Meet at the Kenneth L. Wilson campground near Mt. Tremper at 10:00 for a brief introduction on hiking gear and safety. We will leave for the Overlook Mountain trailhead near Woodstock at 10:30 and the hike will start at 11:00. Expect to return to the parking area around 3:00, but it could be later depending on the abilities of the group.
