Whiteface Mountain Ski Center - Unit Management Plan

Whiteface Mountain Ski Center is located in the Town of Wilmington, Essex County, New York and is a New York State - owned facility. It operates under the administrative jurisdiction of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and is managed by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) through a Memorandum of Understanding with the DEC. The facility is classified as an "Intensive Use Area" under the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (SLMP).

Whiteface Mountain operates as a year-round recreational, day-use resort, providing opportunities for public use such as competitive and recreational downhill skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and summer scenic gondola rides. Whiteface Mountain derived its name from the white anorthositic bedrock exposed on the northern flank and summit of the mountain. The unique topography of Whiteface is unparalleled in the northeast ski industry, with the greatest vertical drop east of the Mississippi at 3,166 feet. The unique terrain accommodates all level of skiing abilities in this natural and scenic setting.

In 2004, ORDA completed a Unit Management Plan (UMP) and Final Generic Environmental Impact Statement (FGEIS) for Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. In 2006, the UMP was amended to allow for new ski trail development, modifications to pumphouse #1 and the Easy Acres Lodge, and the construction of a new staff access road.

If you would like to obtain a copy of either the 2004 UMP or the 2006 UMP amendment, please contact ORDA at (518) 523-1655 or info@orda.org.
