Oneida Hills Management Unit
The Oneida Hills planning unit consists of nine state forests in northern Oneida County, generally north of Rome and on the southeastern reaches of the Tug Hill Plateau. The state forest lands total 13,460 acres and are located in the towns of Ava, Boonville, Lee, Steuben and Western.
The following state managed properties are included in this unit:
Buck Hill - 1,599 acres
Canada Creek - 627 acres
Clark Hill - 2,820 acres
Jackson Hill - 1,163 acres
Penn Mountain - 2,646 acres
Point Rock - 1,148
South Hill - 522 acres
Webster Hill - 828 acres
West Branch - 527 acres
How to Provide Input into the Management of this Unit:
The UMP process consists of several steps: create detailed maps of the unit; inventory the wildlife and natural resources found on the unit; map the current infrastructure and proposed new facilities; and plan future management actions and public use.
Any person or group who would like to provide input or comments on the future management of this unit can mail Senior Forester Mary Kay Allen at NYSDEC, 225 North Main Street, Herkimer, NY, 13350 or e-mail Region 6 Unit Management Plan. Public comments received before September 28, 2012 can be incorporated into the draft UMP.
A public scoping meeting will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 6 PM until 9 PM in the Steuben Town Hall, 9458 Soule Rd, Steuben, (Turn west off of State Route 12 at Remsen onto Starr Hill Road, turn left on Fuller Road then continue to Soule Road). For the first hour the public will have the opportunity to meet individually with DEC personnel and make comments regarding the management of this unit. Public comments will also be requested after a draft plan has been prepared and released for public review.
