Tree Boards

tree boards inventory community trees
A tree board (committee, commission or council) is a group of people responsible, usually by ordinance, for overseeing management of the community trees, also known as the urban forest. It may be made up of municipal staff, local citizens and/or tree care professionals.

The ordinance giving the tree board its authority is usually incorporated as part of a tree ordinance. It can also be a stand alone ordinance. The main components of a tree ordinance include establishment, membership, terms, duties, and meetings. See the Tree Ordinance page on this site for sample ordinances which include establishment of a Tree Board.
DEC Regional Urban Foresters can provide assistance to existing tree boards and to communities that want to create a tree board. For more information contact your local DEC Lands and Forests office.
