In October 2007, New York State announced the availability of $1 million from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) for smart growth planning. The funds were made available to Adirondack Park communities for planning projects within the following grant categories:

Village, Hamlet and Town Center Revitalization
Sustainable Economic Development
Cultural, Environmental and Natural Adirondack Resources

The Department received over 50 applications from around the Park, requesting a total of more than $3 million. Applications were evaluated through a pre-established competitive review process.
