3. Cleaning Up Pollution on the Hudson River

four decades ago
The Hudson has suffered from many types of pollution - the picture shows the polluted condition of the "Albany Pool" before sewage treatment plants were built to serve towns along the river. Raw sewage had starved the river of dissolved oxygen, harmed fish and rendered the water unsightly and malodorous.
In the past four decades, the state bond acts and the federal Clean Water Act have helped riverside municipalities provide secondary wastewater treatment, which removes much of the organic material from their sewage before it is discharged into the river. Widespread sewage treatment has greatly improved water quality in the river.
