The Hudson flows past New York City
The Palisades lose height south of the George Washington Bridge, as a skyline of a different sort rears up on the Hudson's eastern bank. The great metropolis of New York once depended on the river for trade, transportation, food, and recreation, but as the city grew it fouled the estuary with its wastes.
