Sentinel Range Wilderness Area - Unit Management Plan

The Sentinel Range Wilderness is composed of approximately 23,000 acres in the towns of Wilmington, North Elba and Keene in Essex County. It is bounded by Route 86 on the north, Route 73 on the south, and private lands on the east and west.

The mountains of the Sentinel Range are one of the main attractions in the area. Kilburn Mountain is the highest point at 3893'. Hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and climbing are popular within this wilderness. The summit of Sentinel and Pitchoff Mountains offer outstanding views of the surrounding area.

DEC is currently developing a Unit Management Plan for the Sentinel Range Wilderness. If you have questions or comments about the UMP process, please email us at: r5.ump@dec.ny.gov.
