Firewood Sales on State Forests in Region 4/Capital Region & Northern Catskills

Home Firewood Sales in Region 4

Periodically the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation accepts bids from homeowners to cut firewood on state forests in the Capital Region and Northern Catskills. The specific forests and areas within the forests that participate in this program vary from year-to-year. Due to the increased demand for firewood, sales are only offered through a sealed bid auction and not by lottery. Forests participating in the program this year, as well as maps, rules and bid forms are listed below.

2017 Region 4 Home Firewood Program

DEC's Region 4 Stamford office accepted bids from homeowners to cut firewood on state forests in Otsego county. Due to the increased demand for firewood, sales are only offered through a sealed bid auction and not by lottery. Sealed bids for the lots identified below will be accepted until 3:00 pm, January 15, 2018. Bids must be submitted using the bid form(s) provided on this page.

All firewood for sale is standing, live trees located off-road and will require a chainsaw, tractor and cart, or a 4-wheel drive truck for cutting, access, and hauling. The trees available for cutting are marked by DEC foresters to ensure that the only wood removed is done so to support conservation efforts or to safeguard habitat. Removal of marked trees improves forest health and the growing stock of understory trees and vegetation.

There are 10 cords available for harvest and the minimum bid is $200. A standard cord is a pile of wood measuring 4'x4'x8' when cut and stacked.

For additional information, contact Nathan Funk in DEC's Stamford office at 65561 State Route 10, Suite 10, Stanford, NY 12167, (607) 652-3694 (Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
