Boreas Ponds Tract

In March 2018, Governor Andrew Cuomo approved a proposal for the 20,543-acre Boreas Ponds Tract that classified 11,412 acres as part of the High Peaks Wilderness, 9,118 acres as part of the Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest, and 11 acres as the Boreas Ponds Primitive Area.

Unit Management Plan Amendments

The Department has released draft amendments to Unit Management Plans (UMPs) for the Vanderhwhacker Mountain Wild Forest and the High Peaks Wilderness Complex and will be accepting public comment on these plans until June 27, 2018.

Interim Access Plan

The Interim Access Plan (Interim Plan) identifies opportunities for the public to access and use the Boreas Ponds Tract, subject to the retained rights of the lease holders and The Nature Conservancy. This Interim Plan allows public access to specified areas of the Boreas Tract and provides for appropriate protective measures until the Department adopts UMP amendments for the area.
