Benthic Mapper Viewing Tips
More information About Benthic Mapper
Note: Certain browsers may cause performance conflicts with the Benthic Mapper application.
Benthic Mapper works with Netscape versions 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7 higher or Internet Explorer versions 4, 5 and 6. It does not work with Netscape 6.0 and higher.
Optimizing Your Viewer
Benthic Mapper is best viewed at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, though it can be viewed adequately at 800 x 600. We do not recommend using lower resolutions. For best results, you should make any changes to your screen resolution or browser settings before you start Benthic Mapper.
Adjustments to your web browser's properties may help to increase the size of the viewing area in Benthic Mapper. These adjustments include: hiding the toolbars, reducing the font size, and hiding the task bar.
Hiding The Toolbars
Hiding one or more of the toolbars in your browser will increase the size of the map on your screen.
Netscape: Select View > Show > Toolbar and uncheck the toolbar you want to hide. You can return the toolbars by rechecking them.
Internet Explorer: Select View > Toolbars and again, uncheck the toolbar or feature you want to hide. You can also hide the status bar by selecting View > Status Bar and unchecking it.
Reducing Browser Font Size
To create more screen space for the map, you can reduce the size of the font that your browser displays.
Netscape: Click on the Options menu on the menu bar and select Preferences. To the left in the Preferences dialogue box, the Category list appears. Expand the Appearance heading. Select Font and set the font to whatever size suits you. Click OK.
Internet Explorer: Select Fonts from the View pull-down menu. When the fonts menu pops out to the right, choose a size option.
Hiding The Taskbar
The Windows Taskbar Auto hide function can make the Taskbar (at the bottom of the screen) disappear when you're not using it. When you need the Taskbar to reappear, simply move your pointer to the bottom of the screen. The Taskbar will remain as long as you keep the mouse pointer over it.
To use the Auto hide function, right click on an empty space on the Taskbar. The Properties dialogue box appears. Check the box next to Auto hide. Click OK.
Changing Your Screen Resolution
Changing your screen resolution can greatly increase the size of your desktop area. To change your screen resolution, right-click on an open space on your desktop. A menu will appear. Select Properties from the bottom of the menu. The Display Properties window will appear.
In Display Properties, select the Settings tab. On the right side of the window in the section called Desktop Area, there is a sliderule that you can use to adjust the resolution of your desktop. Adjust this to your desired resolution. This new resolution will affect all of your desktop applications and will remain in effect until you change it back. Note: Depending on your system, your computer may require you to restart before it can change the resolution settings.
If you use a screen reader, Benthic Mapper will not be accessible to you. To get information about the Hudson River that is presented in Benthic Mapper, please call or email Betsy Blair at the Hudson River Estuary Program, (845)758-7010.
