Register for EstuaryLive 2009

Join naturalists, students, and scientists to explore one of our region's most valuable resources at Hudson River EstuaryLive 2009. EstuaryLive is a free, annual series of Internet field trips exploring the uniqueness of estuaries around the U.S. The program includes live and archived broadcasts and videos featuring educators and scientists covering relevant topics such as climate change, estuarine inhabitants, monitoring and data collection, and estuarine ecology.

Meet the Estuary

Marist College students with a Hudson River catfish
This Hudson catfish is one of many river denizens you may meet during the broadcasts

Meet some fish and other animals that call the Hudson home, see students engaged in field research, and learn how scientists monitor short-term and long-term changes in the estuary. Explore the dynamic nature of the estuary as we celebrate the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage up the river, including how the river has changed since Hudson's time. EstuaryLive will be broadcast from Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, NY, midway along the 153-mile-long Hudson River Estuary. Norrie Point is a National Estuarine Research Reserve.

A Two Part Program

The program consists of two parts:

11:15-11:45 AM Part one explores how we learn about changes to the estuary, from tapping commercial fishermen's knowledge to using fisheries-science technology. We highlight student science in the Juvenile Glass Eel Project and talk about current and projected climate change impacts for the Hudson.

1:30-2:00 PM Part two begins in Norrie Cove with students seining for fish. We then move to shore to examine their catch and view a variety of saltwater and freshwater species that now call the Hudson home. We distinguish natives from newcomers and build a live food chain.
