Tree and Shrub Seedling Sale and School Giveaway

The nursery grows over 50 species of trees and shrubs, many native to New York. Orders can be placed through mid-May.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) annual sale of tree and shrub seedlings is underway and will continue through the month of May. Low-cost planting materials are available to encourage landowners to enhance New York's environment. DEC's Saratoga Tree Nursery produces more than 50 species of trees and shrubs, many native to the state, for planting on public and private land.
Planting advice is available from DEC forestry offices and private forestry consultants. Please visit DEC's website for the pamphlet 2009 Trees and Shrubs.
The minimum order for conifers and wildlife shrubs is 100; for hardwoods, 25, and for container stock, 50. Mixed packets of 30-100 shrub seedlings also are available for homeowners who wish to attract wildlife.
Seedlings can be ordered through the month of May by calling the Saratoga Nursery Seedling Stock Program at 518-587-1120 weekdays between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. Call early for best selection. Mail orders also are accepted and can be sent to the Saratoga Tree Nursery, 2369 Route 50, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Seedlings are shipped beginning in mid-April.
Free Seedlings for Schools
Schools across the state are now eligible to receive free tree seedlings for spring planting through the DEC School Seedling Program. The program provides 50 tree seedlings or a mixed packet of 30 wildlife shrubs to any school that would like to participate. The seedlings can be planted on school grounds or other community space. Teachers and students are encouraged to discuss beforehand whether they want to plant for erosion control, wildlife enhancement, windbreak or other types of conservation.
Planting 50 tree seedlings will require approximately 1,800 square feet, while shrub plantings will require about half that space. To participate, schools should call the Saratoga Tree Nursery at the number above or contact their nearest DEC regional forestry office and request a school seedling brochure, which contains all the information necessary to place an order. All orders must be received at the nursery by March 31.
